Portrait: Thermal power
Verbund is one of the largest producers of electricity from thermal power and also one of the biggest suppliers of district heating in Austria.
Verbund constructs and operates thermal power plants with and without combined power/heat generation through VERBUND-Austrian Thermal Power GmbH & Co KG.
The company currently has approx. 350 employees at the power plant locations Dürnrohr and Mellach-Werndorf and headquarters in Graz.
Verbund owns a total of eight thermal power plants, of which the Dürnrohr, Mellach and Neudorf-Werndorf II power plants have a total electrical capacity of 815 MW.
Approx. 4 billion kWh of electrical energy and 900 million kWh of thermal energy is generated each year.
Next to the run-of-river power plants and reservoirs, the thermal power plants in the Alps form Verbund’s third pillar of electricity production which is not dependent on climatic conditions. The safeguarding of the power and heat supply places great challenges on the thermal production. These challenges include a high degree of accessibility, short initiation times, flexibility in application - and all of this at prices in line with market conditions.
